At the risk of sounding more like a knuckle-dragging troglodyte than I really am, may I please push back on the woke genda that we must make voting easy as pie – minimum effort, no sacrifice, little sense of duty.
Progressives want a system in which you don’t even have to leave the light of your own cell phone to vote. They want you registered to vote automatically when you do something like, say, get a driver’s license. Then, they want to send a live ballot by mail to you, requested or not.
The madness doesn’t stop there.
Progressives also advocate registering to vote online. They fantasize about a world in which people may vote on their cell phone because it “cuts down on paperwork” and “reduces face-to-face contact.” They’d like to expand early voting to months ahead of Election Day. And, if they had their way, they’d like election officials to “stop being so nosy” about why voters request an absentee ballot. They want rules eliminated that require an excuse for asking for an absentee ballot.
They envision “portable” registration, which means if you register in, say, California and move to Nevada, you should be automatically registered in Nevada. That’s crazy talk.
Look, I want everyone who is eligible – and who wants – to vote. But these woke ideas not only raise significant election integrity and states’ rights issues, they endorse the idea that American voters ought not have to lift a finger to participate in democracy.
Democracy always requires effort, does it not?
Making the time to trundle down to your local polling place, signing your “John Hancock” in front of an election official and presenting ID, isn’t asking too much. Saying that those simple steps “disenfranchise” minority voters, is an awful thing to say. Black and brown people love this country as much as white people. They will lift a finger to vote and saying otherwise is, let’s be honest, racist as hell.
If I were king of Nevada and I could decree the world perfect, everyone physically able would vote in person on Election Day. That’s all I’m tryin’ to say.
