Are You Ready for some (Spring) football

July 23, 2020 by 215staff

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association handed down a ruling on Thursday wiping out any high school athletics during the rest of 2020. But that doesn’t mean fall sports won’t be played.

They will just take place later in the school year.

“In consultation with league/region presidents and superintendents, the NIAA staff is issuing the attached under authority granted by the NIAA Board of Control at the last Board meeting,” said Bart Thompson, executive director of the NIAA. “Actions by school districts and governing boards of NIAA member schools made it necessary to make adjustments to NIAA sports seasons for the 2020-21 academic year.

“With some fall sports season practices originally scheduled to begin July 30, schools needed to know if adjustments were to be made and what they would be.”

All season will be six weeks and there will be no state playoffs. Each region or league can determine if they want to hold their own playoffs, but they must still fit within the six-week schedule.

The schedule is as follows: winter sports (including boys and girls basketball and wrestling) will start practice on Jan. 2, with first games beginning Jan. 15 and the season ending on Feb. 20.

Fall sports, including football and girls volleyball, will begin Feb. 20 (although football practice can begin Feb. 13). Games can be played from March 5 through April 10.

Spring sports, including baseball and softball, will begin practice on April 3 with games slated from April 13 through May 22.

The holding of practices and competitions are subject to government directives, orders from state and local health departments, the restrictions associated with the phase of reopening in place at the time, and local district and school mandates.
