So, I started this website about a year ago as an experiment to see if a hyperlocal website could gain enough traffic to be a viable business venture. … then I basically ignored it because my regular job and other aspects of life took precedence.
But my regular job and other aspects of life basically were turned upside down a couple of weeks ago. The company I ran, which produced weekly newspapers in rural Nevada, was impacted by the coronavirus crisis is a big way, just like many small, community newspapers across the country. Many of our papers were shuttered, and nearly all the staff was furloughed. Including my position.
So, I have some free time while on the job search. And what better use of my time than to resurrect my 215Southwest.com project. I’ve started loaded content two weeks ago on a daily basis and will soon start writing some original articles about news pertinent to those who live in Hopefully it can turn into a real job for me as well at some point as well.
Southwest Las Vegas, basically homes south of the 215 and west of Interstate 15. That includes the communities of Southern Highlands, Mountain’s Edge, Nevada Trails, Rhodes Ranch and all the smaller developments in between.
My main background as a journalist has been in community news. I helped start the View Newspapers at the Las Vegas Review-Jounal back in the 90s and then launched high-end community/lifestyle magazines in Nevada, Arizona and Kansas for Gannett Co in the 2000s. Most recently, I ran a company that ran six weekly newspapers in rural Nevada, all of which had a community feel.
In short, I know how to do this.
Anyone interested in contributing articles or suggesting story ideas can contact me directly at bbm.kirk@gmail.com or at 775-316-2335. Check out the site, bookmark it and go to it daily. At some point in the near future, I will have a daily email blast listing postings on the site. When that comes around, sigh up!
Options in getting your daily news are becoming more and more limited. Hopefully this project will help fill that void.If you find the information worthwhile or interesting, share it on Facebook or twitter. Let your friends know about it.

Kirk Kern
